“I’d love to see that fear of fire shift to a respect for fire — learning that fire can be a tool that we can use to manage our land, and help bring balance to it.”

Even worse today. AQI 71 on a scale of 1-10 (1248 on the US scale of 0-300). Poisonous particulate matter is literally off the charts. #bcwildfire

And that history informs how many locals view the future.

Skuppah councillor Sherry McIntyre:

“My great-grandparents lived here and my great-grandchildren will probably live here. This area has always been populated, and always will be.”
TIL - this cloud visible from Vancouver is a pyrocumulus or flammagenitus cloud - it’s the Boston Bar fire. The canyon there is lined with First Nations fishing stations that have been continuously repaired for 1000+ years, sites so old footprints have been worn into the stone.

I just wrote this. A bunch of it revolves around Skuppah First Nation just south of the village. It was never evacuated in 2021. It now is. But story also notes that "Lytton" is much larger than that which burned five years ago.

A couple years ago, Kanaka Bar First Nation (to the south) organized to fight off a fire in the same area. The number of homes in the natural path of this fire are limited. The fire appears to be just northeast of the Skuppah FN reserve

The village of Lytton is still struggling, but the broader area “has always been populated, and always will be,” says Sherry McIntyre, a councillor with Skuppah First Nation.

It's a keyboard with this layout! Instead of typing out letters individually, you type the word phonetically by pressing all the keys at the same time. Some words, like "and" are used frequently enough that they have arbitrary shorthand shapes. The shape for "and" is "SKP." Skuppah!
