Pretty funny. First time I've laughed at anything that guy has said!

Also pretty funny response:

I'm not rationalist-adjacent myself, but this excerpt from a Slate Star Codex post might be illuminating? If I had to summarize it, I'd say high-decoupling means "consider an idea on its own, without reference to its context."

Hat tip to @faineg.com for the link:

Because I'd gone to PenguiCon in 2006-2009 and was friends with Eric S. Raymond at the time LessWrong and SlateStarCodex started metastasizing, I recognize a number of the earlier points in the timeline Duncan documents and some of the people.

why have so many trans women around me been infected with whatever lesswrong and slatestarcodex and 4chan and somethingawful and whatever the shit give you

I never used any of those! this probably comes as a shock to many but that's right it's me, the only trans women who didn't use those, I guess.

RT @slatestarcodex: I don't think that's true. You know the names of at least seventeen French kings named "Louis" alone!

RT @slatestarcodex: Actually, I think the average person can name more famous kings than famous mystics.

RT @slatestarcodex: I agree one shouldn't lie and cheat to gain power, but at some point the thought "how am I going to accomplish goals?" should cross your mind.

RT @slatestarcodex: I don't know, I think it really does damage the credibility of a movement with 60 year old voters in Ohio when it's hosting Slutcon and asking questions about sex with dead cows on its application forms.

Half the word count of a top-10 slatestarcodex post is surely safe.

RT @slatestarcodex: I think you've done enough calling us paranoid and preposterous. The next step is for you to defend your position in public against someone who will push back against it. I'm happy to meet you for a debate anywhere, anytime.

Current "SJW" who read a ton of SlateStarCodex and participated in its reddit a bunch around 2017/2018 and yeah, you're pretty well onto something.

I think a lot of us are memory-holing just how absolutely awful progressives on the internet were 10 years ago.

What's weird is that in 2013 I was going thru divorce, angry, confused, reading a lot of blogs.

I think I read SlateStarCodex for like, two weeks? Was like "nah...". Ended up on the late Gordon White's site instead. For awhile.

So, yes, "THE OCCULT SAVED ME FROM FALLING INTO A LITERAL AI CULT"!

tbh when I was into SlateStarCodex in HS I don't remember people talking up HPMOR that much — they generally referred more to The Sequences, which is mostly accessibly written intro to Philosophy stuff.

Something entertaining about those less online than me having to get their heads around LessWrong, SlateStarCodex etc.

I bet RationalWiki is getting a traffic spike.

We are weirdly living in the world of the LessWrong/SlateStarCodex/TPOT weirdos

I used to follow slatestarcodex (and done a meetup in Italy) and I could not miss Aella, I also joined lesswrong out of curiosity but the AI doomism put me off immediately, all the alignment chatter sounded me like medieval scholastics and completely incomprehensible, the polyamorous stuff better

This, so much.

SlateStarCodex is a big problem, as I can attest the man is terrifyingly good at sanewashing far right shit.

Ironically it was commitment to *actual* rationalism (as in actual interest in thinking according to facts and logic) that made me realize it was a scam, but it took years.
Also the links to "Dark Enlightement" fantasy bullshit, SSC being a big blog run by a guy intentionally laundering far right shit...
Idk if mainstream coverage has gotten the idea that moldbug and the dumbest history of the rats/AI world are also kind of connected.

I blame LessWrong and SlateStarCodex.
