More Quakers, John Woolman and moving from abstract opposition to action (from Michael Birkel’s Silence and Witness)—going to be thinking more about what modern-day work is the equivalent of “writ[ing] an instrument of slavery,” and what it would take to do more than just feel uncomfortable about it
1. The raw material for a leading most often lies in ordinary life. We can find God there if we are attentive. Life in a small town in the English colonies of North America required that most people have multiple talents to make ends meet. John Woolman was, among other things, a tailor, an orchard keeper, a school teacher, a surveyor, and a scrivener or writer of last wills and testaments and other legal documents. He had long been personally opposed to slavery, but his first public witness to that opposition came not in some extraordinary event but instead in the very ordinariness of daily life. He seems to have been caught off guard, but as he attended to the resulting affliction in his mind, he found that he was moved to deeper commitment. My employer, having a Negro woman, sold her and directed me to write a bill of sale, the man being waiting who bought her. The thing was sudden, and though the thoughts of writing an instrument of slavery for one of my fellow creatures felt uneasy, yet I remembered I was hired by the year, that it was my master who directed me to do it, and that it was an elderly man, a member of our society who bought her; so through weakness I gave way and wrote it, but at the executing it, I was so afflicted in my mind that I said before my master and the Friend that I believed slavekeeping to be a practice inconsistent with the Christian religion. This in some degree abated my uneasi-ness, yet as often as I reflected seriously upon it I thought I should have been clearer if I had desired to be excused from it as a thing against my conscience, for such it was. Prom this humble beginning of a meagre protest, a life direction was formed. When similar circumstances occurred later, John Woolman declined to write an instrument of slavery, at times successfully convincing the slavekeeper to free the at times successfully convincing the slavekeeper to free the slaves. Throughout the rest of his life, he worked to end slave keeping, particularly among Friends but also among other English colonists. His anti-slavery treatises bear the subtitle, Recommended to Professors of [that is, those who profes) Christianity of Every Denomination. Historians of colonial America note that slavery was so interwoven in the fabric of everyday life as to be practically invisible - at least to those who were not slaves. It took unusual clear-sightedness to perceive how unjust it was and to imagine a society without slavery. John Woolman's vision was borne of keen attention to the ordinary details of life, to find God's presence and messages there.
