I was interviewed for this story about a recently-discovered narrative of escape from bondage in 1831 by a man named Thomas, from Baltimore, who eventually became a sailor. Yet another thrilling story of the triumph of intelligence and will over brute power.

I once read a letter from a black soldier, a freedman, to a white abolitionist promising to send her his history in his next letter. Needless to say, I never found the next letter. #slaveryarchive
As a historian, I love and hate this. What did the address say?? The cruelties of the historical record.
