an early taxation in Slavonia (modern Croatia) was called "marturina," payable in marten pelts. when the Kingdom of Croatia stamped coinage ca. 1250, it included a marten on the banovac. Croatia's first modern currency (1994-2023) was called "kuna," marten, and today they stamp one on their €1 coin
