Artisanal and small-scale gold mining communities in several major producing countries are mounting organized resistance to government-led formalization

Ghana produced a record 5.94mn ounces of gold in 2025. Small-scale mining accounted for 52.38% of total production, overtaking large-scale operations for the first time.

The namibian mining sector is entering an exciting new era with the launch of the Namibia Indigenous Mining Association (Nima). Nima is a pioneering body created to represent and empower emerging, artisanal, small-scale, and medium-scale miners across the country. Its mission is clear – to ensure that indigenous Namibians have a strong voice in the mining industry and to promote the beneficiation of Namibia’s vast natural resources. By focusing on value addition, Nima aims to create sustainable, generational wealth for communities and drive inclusive economic growth. As Namibians we want partners, not masters, and investors, not exploiters. At the helm of this dynamic new association are two visionary leaders: Francis Gurirab, who serves as the executive chairperson and co-founder, and Denny/Goagoseb, the vice chairperson and co-founder. We are leading Nima with a deep passion for empowerment and transformation. Nima stands as a beacon of hope for many indigenous miners who have long been underrepresented. It seeks to provide advocacy, capacity building, technical support, and market access opportunities, ensuring that the wealth of Namibia’s natural endowments benefits its rightful custodians. As the association grows, it welcomes partnerships with the government, private sector players, and communities to build a resilient and thriving indigenous mining industry for Namibia – today, and for generations to come.
