RDP Auth PSA: FIDO2 != smartcards. They use very different API layers, and they're not the same.
Smartcards: Kerberos with PKINIT and X.509 certificates, requires a KDC line-of-sight
FIDO2: doesn't use Kerberos, requires RDP RDS AAD auth and being joined to Entra ID

143. American transit planners are used to a glut of micro data via surveys and surveillance apps (including smartcards) and can't fathom how unnecessary it is for good planning here. I don't need to know exact origins and destinations to plan a Takt.

Agency management meanwhile wanted tap cards - LA and Vancouver both bought Cubic smartcards that neither city really needed, and bundled the smartcards with replacing POP with faregates. What interests these agencies is more difficult fare barriers, never anything that helps passengers like PSDs.

Tap On/Tap Off, Touch On/Touch Off, Tag On/Tag Off or Validate? Here's a map of what we call it when we board public transport with our Smartcards across Australia.
They also have a Top Up feature, and to 'top it off', Translink also has a 'Tap Into Smart Ticketing' webpage!

Yep. It's a solved problem with a variety of payment methods - Germany doesn't do smartcards but we have payment by app or auto-stamped paper tickets. It just requires understanding that there's good commuter rail outside North America.

It turns out that replacing the static payment authz tokens (PAN, CVV) with smartcards that generate non-replayable cryptographic payment authorization messages e2ee'd to the card issuer made infecting points of sale effectively useless.
