Boards! This is this year's entry into my longstanding fixation on "drive a lot of smartleds using RS-485 for data, and DC cabling, to step 18VDC down to 5VDC using a DC/DC converter".

This year is extra small (the same size as a 4x6 LEGO plate).

Progress update 2:

smartleds work! Got the basic clocks, SPI, and GPIO configuration working enough to do a basic little "breathing" pattern through the rainbow. It's more colorful IRL than the video.

They are as blindingly bright as expected, so the paper here is for diffusion

I started looking at the pins available on the -28 package, and realized I could get away with:

* Smartleds
* Two I2C ports
* an SPI port
* a UART
* The original 2x buttons + 3x LEDs
* AND an 8-pin GPIO header

I did most of this here:...

So porting sprocket-boot over to async/await w/ Cassette went super quick, what fun little state machine behavior would make for a fun demo?

I have smartleds and buttons, and I can act as an I2C peripheral. I can daisy chain some sprockets together.

Sketched up a little 4x mechanical key + OLED + sprocket. I'll probably smatter an irresponsible amount of 2.1mm smartleds on each board too, for good measure.

I couldn't fit a battery board on this, so I might make a lower mezzanine to act as a "case bottom" and batt. holder.

I don't NEED 24x16mm 8x6 character displays made from 48x 2020 smartleds, but you know... maybe I want them?

Current brainworm: what if I built a giant (1m diameter, 1m tall) chandelier out of 1500 SK6812 smartleds?

Something like the SDL1000X, or so.

My backup plan is a lot of smartleds.

Was working today to get the "modem" part of my firmware going, so I can do my load testing stuff.

Then I realized it's PROBABLY easier to write another firmware for amodem that is a much dumber "get rs-485 data, drive smartleds".

Now I can't decide what to do. Going to bed.
