#Smoot-Hawley
Well, it will be something worse than the Great Depression, only thankfully this time the world isn't following us into Smoot-Hawley nonsense.

It will also be worse than what the collapse of the USSR was for Russia. They fell apart; this was deliberate destruction from within.

But Trump can dig in like a bulldog if he’s confronted or told he is forbidden from doing something. When SCOTUS blocked his emergency tariffs, he pounced on the never-used Smoot-Hawley tariffs from the ‘30s and decided to make Canada his whipping boy.

If we use ground forces, this is going to nuke Rs already slim chances for anything--but for years and years of relevance; just like after the Smoot-Hawley tariffs doomed their party, so too will trump's tariff's and throwing troops lives in danger for literally zero reason but from his own making.

We may yet get to see.

A destruction worse than the great depression, and worse than the collapse of the USSR in Russia, is nearly upon us.

Thankfully, the rest of the world didn't follow us into Smoot-Hawley nonsense this time.

Whether this leads to reforms here is an open question.

They should call looking dumb on live TV a “Hawley-Schmitt Act” in honor of Hawley-Smoot.

Oh my god. Please tell us you also asked if the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act raised or lowered taxes and if it helped.

2) When the Smoot-Hawley tariff package went into effect, the rest of the world followed suit. This time, thankfully, the world is doing the opposite of our suicidal moves. Every trading alliance he destroys is replaced internationally by another one that excludes the US.

Basically demands for a full-scale retreat into Smoot Hawley style protectionism from German industry, with the potential to do serious damage to an EU economy in the service of incumbent manufacturing jobs. Such is the political panic of the moment.
Remarkable shift in German industry thinking on China. From new BDI paper:

“Even if de-risking entails costs, including in the form of counter-reactions, passivity would in the long term be economically considerably more costly & irresponsible from a security-policy perspective”

I have been working on Smoot Hawley. Academics hated it, populist politicians shat on them for hating it. It definitely predates McCarthy though I think you are right that McCarthy amplified it.

Someone should share this with yhe Whitehouse. Not POTUS, he's to dumb to understand since he went to Wharton... smfh.

Trump's Midterm Concerns Mirror Historical Economic Fears, Analyst Warns
President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to avoid becoming the second president in U.S. history to face significant economic downturns during his term, specifically referencing Herbert Hoover, who signed the Smoot-Hawley tariffs that deepened the Great Depression. Six weeks before the 2026 midterms, analysts are noting a potential shift in political dynamics, particularly in Kansas and Iowa, where Republican candidates face unexpected challenges. The Cook Political Report has downgraded Kansas' Senate race from 'likely Republican' to 'lean Republican' as Democrat Adam Hamilton challenges incumbent Senator Roger Marshall. Marshall has also begun to distance himself from the White House on immigration policy, stating that ICE operations should coordinate with local law enforcement. In Iowa, conservative radio host Steve Deace reported that Republican pollsters warned of a challenging midterm environment, comparing it to the 2006 elections when Republicans lost both chambers of Congress under George W. Bush. Democratic strategist Doug Sosnik noted a 'noticeable shift toward Democrats' since early September, citing factors such as a failed war in Iran, rising prices, Trump's family's self-enrichment, and the president's increasingly erratic behavior. Trump's team highlights the GOP's fundraising advantage and competitive candidates in traditionally Democratic states, but analyst Mark Halperin argues that Republican strategists are privately acknowledging the severity of the situation, with many emails and calls indicating that the 'Blue tsunami' could be more severe than anticipated. Halperin warns that time is running out for the GOP to reverse the trend, as voters may have already made their decisions, leaving the party with limited options to prevent a significant loss in the midterms.

Also don't bother doing deals with him, he will break them & laws. He even breaks his own deals like CUSMA, and even claimed it as discrimination by Canada (nope) vs the US as one of the justifications for his Smoot-Hawley tariffs. bsky.app/profile/noth...

When Republicans lost their majority in 1930, they were punished for the Smoot-Hawley tarriffs. It took 16 years for America to forget the great depression and give Republicans another majority, but give it they did.

Eh Smoot-Hawley didn't cause 1929, just made it worse
September 23, 2026 at 5:56 PM
It will ripple through the global economy and risk spiraling into Smoot-Hawley 2.0
September 23, 2026 at 5:36 PM
On the "plus" side this can easily spiral into Smoot-Hawley on steroids and the entertainment value is priceless.

The export ban thing seems like a recipe for a smoot hawley level of world self ownage, although to the extent that it’d fuck world oil markets and push all marginal consumers to renewable electrics so much the better for the climate
