It's the little things, and I have to hold onto these small triumphs of nature right at the moment
Cuttings of a white rose, a pink hydrangea and flowering Japanese spikenard in a cut glass vase on a painted windowsill. Small snailshells lie on a glass dish amongst a blue painted heart 💙 (Ukraine). Beyond the window the garden is lit with sunlight below a blue sky

Nighttime Garden Snailshells resort. #snail #invertebrates
Small garden snail with light brown and a hazelnut brown shell. The animal sits on a twig, munching on something. His body is shades of gray. He faces the right. Sticks and a grass cover most of the image. Very tiny dark-gray snail with almost white shell with brown stripes. The baby snail is on top of the curled up brown leaf. The shell is less than one centimeter wide. A swirl of a striped snail shell in shades of brown, hazelnut colours in the middle and in stripes. Autumnal brownish leaves cover the ground, dried plant stems zig-zag throughout the photo. A baby garden snail under scattered grass.

marmalade cats, and their backs are snailshells. People rarely see them because they will pull their cat bodies into their shells, and disguise themselves as rocks. They are the only kind of cat I'm not allergic too."

A lovely dream!

Today we are featuring RMSBA member Rose Torres! Rose sat down to answer some questions about herself and her art practice. Swipe through to enjoy a taste of her life and work! #art #botanicalart #sciart #scientificillustration #botanicalillustration #natureart #realism #rmsbamemberspotlight
Proudest piece: My most recent painting on kelmscott vellum: Found things. It was so complicated to get all the little things composed just right, and there was so much variation of colors, textures, and size. I really ha to push myself. Little known fact about you: I have as many chickens as I do children: 6! Rose's painting on stretched vellum of Found Things—leaves, sticks, butterfly, dragonfly, bee, seeds, snailshells and more, in a light wood frame. Rose's painting of a huge historic tree called Sylvia's Tree, with vignettes of the tree's bark, seeds, and twigs. Best tip for aspiring botanical artists: Observe. Really look at the world around you, notice the little details, the colors, textures, patterns, how the light plays, and the character of all the natural things around you. Where can you be found online? www.rosetorresart.com and on Instagram @rosetorresart

“Oystering”
Richard Howard

www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/richar...
“Messieurs, l’huitre étoit bonne. Adieu. Vivez en paix.” —Boileau Secret they are, sealed, annealed, and brainless And solitary as Dickens said, but They have something to say: that there is more Than one way to yield. The first—and the hardest. The most nearly hindered—is when you pull Them off the rocks, a stinking, sawing sedge Sucking them back under the black mud, full Of hermit crabs and their borrowed snailshells, Minnows scattering like superstitions, The surf dragging, and every power Life permits them holding out, holding on For dear life. Sometimes the stones give way first. Before they will, but still we gather them, Even if our hands are bloody as meat, For a lunch Queen Victoria preferred: “A barrel of Wellfleet oysters, points down” Could last across the ocean, all the way To Windsor, wakening a widow’s taste. We ate them this afternoon, out of their Armor that was formidably grooved, though It proved our own reversal wiser still: Keep the bones and stones inside, or never Leave the sea. “He was a brave man,” Swift said, “Who first eat one.” Even now, precedent Of centuries is not always enough. Driving the knife into muscles that mould The valves so close to being impartial. Surrender, when it comes—and it must come: Lavish after that first grudging release Back there in the sea, the giving over Of despair, this time—makes me speculate. Like Oscar and oysters, I feel “always Slightly immortal when in the sea”: what Happens now we are out? Is the risk worth While for a potential pearl? No, what we’re Really after is the moment of release, The turn and tear of the blade that tightens, Tortures, ultimately tells. When you spread The shells, something always sticks to the wrong One, and a few drops of liquor dribble Into the sand. Scrape it off: in the full Half, as well as a Fautrier, a Zen Garden, and the smell of herring brine that Ferenczi said we remember from the womb, Lunch is served, in shiny stoneware sockets, Blue milk in the sea’s filthiest cup. More Easily an emblem for the inner man Than dinner, sundered, for the stomach. We Take them queasily, wonder as we gulp When it is—then, now, tomorrow—they’re dead.

because they're not unnatural. thats the point. we know so much about how we process light and information and like, even if we didnt know what math was our brains would still interpret those signals as lines and squares because it's natural. it happens. crystals, snailshells, etc.
