Yeehaw it’s Texas snakeweed season!

Texas snakeweed is a shrubby late-summer through late-fall bloomer in the aster family. It’s native across Texas and south through Mexico, but has also naturalized in parts of the southeast, and northward from Oklahoma through Illinois. 🌿

In “native plants that really ought to be in cultivation as an ornamental” news, let me offer Broom Snakeweed.

Pros:
Cool name
Heat tolerant
Needs no supplemental water
Forms tidy little clump
Long-lasting yellow flowers

Cons:
Mature clumps split in the center like every other goddamn plant

Texas snakeweed (Gutierrezia texana) is starting to pop up along the Salado Creek. What a nice “welcome back home from Georgia” gesture! Texas snakeweed is a late summer-to-fall bloomer (July-October) in the aster family. I’m happy the seasons are changing. Ready for the temperature to drop a bit… 🌿

Did you know Tar Pits have bubbled their way to the surface of Dry Fang Canyon?

Black tar will slow those looking for the new quest item, Sticky Tar. Bright blue Opal Chunks and yellow-flowered Snakeweed also appeared in Dry Fang Canyon.

I don’t think so? The snakeweed has little petals and is basically a clump of tiny daisy-like flowers.

I agree. Though I have also seen a partial rebranding effort calling it golden snakeweed, probably to emphasize the pretty.
