Chapter 6
An interim chapter that I often forget about, but I think Erwin allowing himself to break down in front of Levi after the Cull is a crucial turning point in their relationship. And also, the flirting they allow when Erwin is sleep deprived is SO!! #soaringsaturday #eruri

Today, sailplane pilots are heading to Ephrata WA, for the US Region 8 Championships. For a week, you are tested on your ability to fly, with as much precision and speed as you can. I was lucky to win my first one, but didn't even come close after that. ssa.org/racing-sailplanes/
About 50 sailplanes are tied down for the night, awaiting the next contest day. A sailplane pilot sits in the front of a grid full of sailplanes, awaiting a tow. Multiple tow planes are used to get as many as 50 sailplanes in the air within one hour. A Piper Pawnee towplane with sailplane in tow, rise up off the hot runway. The pilot from Foxtrot Uniform has given the sign to his wing man that he's ready for launch. In turn, the wing runner swings his white hat in a circle, a sign to the towpilot to hit the throttle.

Wing Runner - The unsung hero of a glider launch!

Not only do they help run the wing on take-off, they might have other duties, including pre-flight, tow connection and communication between tow pilot and sailplane pilot.

I never had a problem with it on grass fields. I just cocked my down wing forward a bit, full opposite aileron, rudder the direction of your fuselage to avoid side load on tail wheel. Two seconds and your tail is flying and on one wheel. Just for you I'll post my wing-runner pic on #SoaringSaturday

If you aren't flying, or want to transport your plane, they come apart and fit in a thirty foot long trailer. Two people is all it takes.

This also comes in handy for when you land in a farmer's field and need to have someone come and get you.

#Soaring #Sailplanes #Gliding
Sailplane with one wing removed from the fuselage The sailplane wing is held by the spar root on a dolly. You just roll the wing in and lock it in place inside the trailer. The sailplane fuselage, minus the wings, sits on a wheeled dolly on the tongue of the trailer. The final step is rolling it into the trailer between the wings. Sailplane trailers are very light and easy to tow. Loaded with plane, the weight on these are around 1500 lbs total for an average sailplane.

In soaring, most put an identifier on their tails for contests, or as a call sign. You can do it through a national register or make one up.

When I flew, I had "15B - One Five Bravo" and "VM - Victor Mike"

I'm not going to say I wanted "FU", but if it was available...
