Oppressive rates of #rent and religious persecution drove an alliance of Ulster Presbyterians and Irish Catholics into the #SocietyOfUnitedIrishmen and, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1798, to launch an #IrishRebellion. It allied with Revolutionary France and aimed to create a republic.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1791, the #SocietyOfUnitedIrishmen was founded in #Dublin. An early example of non-sectarian Irish nationalism, it joined Protestants and Catholics in a single movement for independence in a republic. It was ruthlessly suppressed after UK annexed Ireland.

The #BattleOfCastlebar was won #ThisDayInHistory in 1798 by a rebel force from #SocietyOfUnitedIrishmen, with help from #RevolutionaryFrance, with the English taking ten times the casualties. It led to the formation of a #RepublicOfConnacht (the #IrishRepublic) four days later.
