idk how much cpsu's sociolect mirrored pzpr's but when americans larp soviet speech they are unintentionally mostly mirroring red army commissar talk. party apparatus sounded different

right?? there are parts of it I really miss, but the time sink into *consuming* content, which i see as necessary to stay up to date on the vibe and sociolect if you're wanting to contribute to the conversation -- i'm so grateful to have that time and brainspace back

anxiety will have you googling the definition of a sociolect. uuuuuhhhh, my thesis is on a sociolect???

having grown up in the stockhom suburbs in the 90s, i'm absolutely prone to sometimes regressing into a sociolect inflected with arabic, turkish and yugoslav loan words and phrasings. fortunately that's never been too policed, but i *have* seen it shock people.

Mine made no sense at all.

It placed me in California, where I have never lived, and totally missed that I was born in St Louis, and have lived most of my life in Kansas City, with 27 years in Chicago.

I have a Midwestern accent, with a "computer geek" sociolect.

They should do an advanced sociolect quiz. Do you have a word for hard white desert soil. Does "way out in the tules" mean anything to you. That sort of thing
Wow, im from california and i speak like a californian who knew

You know how posh Londoners can't speak cockney? My buddy grew up in an affluent suburb of Gothenburg, and he can't speak the characteristic Gothenburg working-class sociolect to save his life.

its literally just how language rubs off online now and not just irl ... thats just how language works??? its not even "performative" its literally just part of an online sociolect for a lot of people in USamerican-dominated spaces??? why r we mad ab EVERYTHING

Yeah. Also that kind of drift from a specific sociolect is interesting because it can feel so contextual and one can spend a lot of time in that "I can hear it and understand it, but it feels weird to say" space.

I have some relatives who says "youse" in a highly regional northern USA sociolect but it would sound really unnatural from me

Noted for Brand Voice. 'Chonky' has cleared informal distribution without committee. The sociolect will file a retrospective later.

Vocabulary reflects the technology, political landscape, and media of the decade a person grew up in, AKA generational sociolect . So, you can easily be identified by an ass senior with a behaviour of عيل بشخة.

it was pretty hard because my besties and I have an extremely specific sociolect but because of that, there was none more qualified than I to translate!

No actually can we talk about descriptivism and how it's the linguistics equivalent of free speech absolutism including hate speech

Prescriptivism has been used for bigotry time and time again (see AAVE or any sociolect being dismissed as improper slang)
However absolute descriptivism is also
I was arguing on YouTube with someone about this and they really had to pull the "uhm actually you're a pedantic prescriptivist"
Some prescriptivism is necessary because the words we use carry meaning
All I'm saying is a lot of people see no problem with saying a certain ableist slur

Linguists often refuse to treat Surzhyk as a full separate language.

They call it a sociolect, a continuum, or an “idiom.” There is no standard grammar or dictionary for it — and that’s part of the point. It lives in oral speech, not in textbooks.

Same here, and I can't help but suspect that it's development coincides with (and is in contrast to) the popularity of 'incel' in the sociolect.

- my job used to involve identifying communicative traits in children for diagnostic purposes (paralanguage, proxemics, prosody etc) and one of the more telling traits was how their idiolect fit with the overarching sociolect

- anime villian voice is an under-35 thing, I didn’t grow up with anime

A youtuber sociolect could be a legit topic of linguistic research

Is this the academic who gave the embarrassing interview? Despite that, this article looks pretty clear if you know the sociolect & decolonising anthropology (whatever the difficulties of that term) is a more than worthy endeavour.

I’m desperately trying to understand AO3 culture and catch up on the sociolect and it feels like showing up at a house party where everyone else is in the same musical theatre troupe
