I would guess the Germanic languages preserve it better. Albanian is wild in this regard: amicus > mik "friend" ; socius > shok "comrade" ; caelum > qiell "heaven" ; "sky" ; canis > qen "dog" (final two show that it does not differ too much from Romance languages with regard to that consonant shift)
