i know access is a challenge, but i hope some kind of OTA softmods for various TV sets (e.g. install a linux small enough to run entirely in ram and download a firmware from a server and flash it to the NAND in chunks) start showing up because god damn i can't wait to not have to deal w smart tvs

PS3 is the bane of my existence. You’d think after all these years that the softmods would be halfway decent. Nope. Can’t even launch games from XMB without inexplicable black screen crash/lockup that none of the known fixes solve. I’m about to fully format and start over, shit is fucking stupid!

I haven't seen what international prices look like, though wouldn't that be another reason to go with a softmod? Thats like the first thing alot of softmods do is disable region-locking, so just scooping a JP console (which are consistently way cheaper) and softmodding it seems like a nobrainer.

Ever since seeing the softmods ’community’ for it where people were installing OS changes and using the ‘watch youtube and game!’ DS split-screen gimmick for educational searching and note taking I‘ve found myself yearning for it as a pocket laptop, PDA and occasional game device for probably a year

I'm grateful to homebrew devs that sell their ROMs, as poverty prevents me from ever picking up their physical editions, and I can still play ROMs in real hardware thanks to flash carts and/or softmods.
On that note, I'm giddily anticipating Retro Game Forge, while still wishing for a GBA tool...

Also with a pair of working Saturns and Dreamcasts it's probably time I investigate ODE for them. The softmods have limitations, especially on the Saturn since I'm using the cartridge slot for something besides save data.

Free MemoryCard Boot, basically it's a hacked memory card that softmods your PS2 and pets you play homebrew and whatnot.

It was pretty easy for me to justify buying a launch Switch 2 for two reasons:
1) It let me move my account off of my Switch 1 and free it up to sail the high seas.
2) Eventual softmods are typically easier to do on launch window consoles. :V

Yeah, I know Atlus was the publisher of a lot of niche stuff back then, and kind of still are. Which I appreciate because the PS2 era had some bonkers-as-fuck stuff I enjoy, which was part of why I've been spending the last month and change fixing up my old SCPH-75001 and slapping softmods on it.

I see the community “fighting back” for lack of better expression. Softmods, flash carts, optical drive emulators, FPGA; there have been remarkable efforts made to keep original hardware approximation available without buying every last cartridge or disc. Still, Mama just likes her physicals! 😭

It holds your "real" dashboard, its just an annoyance imo, cool idea but annoying to deal with plus all the softmods decide to just wipe your normal dash instead of copying it into VirtualC

If you really mess up (or your HDD fails etc) you're completely unable to boot into your console - OpenXenium has its own little OS that can boot independently of a disc drive or HDD
VirtualC is what softmods use - your real C partition has the actual "soft" exploit in use, and then it mounts...
