The women - known as Solar Mamas – assemble, install, repair and maintain solar power kits in villages across the archipelago. They receive training from a community-based organisation called Barefoot College Zanzibar.

Literacy is low, especially in rural areas of Zanzibar, with limited employment. Since 2015 #BarefootCollege has trained 65 women who have little/no formal education to become solar technicians, to simultaneously promote clean energy & foster socioeconomic development. #SolarMamas
