My chief argument for Solas not using Varric as a puppet is that I don't like it (lols), but my SECOND argument is that it's DEFINITELY not Solas in the Fade. It was Rook, talking to herself. Solas made it happen, but did not control the content.

Solas has to manipulate and lie to get Rook into the Regret Prison, which is funny enough, but also he monologues you the key because he can't fucking help himself and you break out in a FRACTION of the time it took him to connive his way free. Skill issues, all the way down.
