Not forgotten #somme109

Today we remember the final farewells,
the last letters scribbled in haste,
the hollow whistles of zero hour,
and the lines of men rising from their trenches out into hell.

Remembering those who fell, who fought and who lived with the memories of the 1st July 1916.

I was delighted to sit down with Terry from the Tales from the Battlefields podcast to talk about 46th North Midland Division again, this time regarding their disastrous attack at Gommecourt on 1st July 1916. Listen to it wherever you find your podcasts 👍

Thanks to wonderful documentaries like this 1985 ‘Lions Led by Donkeys’ you can still see and hear the voices of some of the men who lived through the 1st July 1916.

A poignant reminder of the first day of the Battle of The Somme - Lt Gilbert Hattersley’s blood-stained map showing the planned advance, up Sausage Valley, of the ‘Cambs Suffolks’ (marked ‘D Coy’ on the map), to Contalmaison.

Hattersley was wounded very early on.
