This photo has not been published before. It shows four individuals singing Christmas carols at night, holding songsheets and little 'Rupert Bear' cardboard lanterns. It was probably taken in 1991, with maybe a dozen teachers and language students singing together. Gross, isn't it. I'm in the back.

Light entertainment. I used to find songsheets like these practically for nothing, in charity shops, and frame them and give them to friends... now they cost quite a lot if you can even find them. And the world has changed. I still like this 'buying a song' idea though. Short thread

A brilliant night out with friends yesterday - tacos and tots followed by a Christmas carol singalong in an absolutely packed pub garden 😊🎄🍽️🎵
Part of a town centre at night, featuring a very old timber-framed building (now an Anthropologie store) and string lights over a narrow street beyond it to the right. Plate with tacos (beef shin and cheese), tater tots, pots of sauce, slice of lime. Around the table, more plates and pots of sauce, glass of water, pint of beer, sauce bottles. Pub garden at night, with at least a couple of hundred people standing and sitting around, mostly under bright white gazebos, drinking, chatting, and singing with songsheets in their hands. Beyond them are the two white gable ends of the historic pub building, a shadowy roofline with chimneys, and the lit-up tower of a cathedral. Street at night, with old timber framed buildings, all black and white, and string lights zigzagging between their tops. The wet road reflects the light.

I really think that doing away with physical media is shortsighted. I inherited my dad’s songsheets and even if I don’t use them, they’re a lovely piece of history. People used to buy sheet music the way we buy albums. Plus I am not convinced of the safety of digitisation. It could all disappear.
