An alternative is some groove box. They have a built in sequencer, so you can build patterns or sometimes even songs without a computer.
The ones that seem cheap and capable there is the Roland MC-101 and Sonicware has a series called Liven, aimed at different styles. The Lofi 12 seems interesting.

Heute kommt (mal wieder) ein neuer Synth. Am liebsten jetzt nach Hause & schrauben. Sonicwares Geschichte ist auch interessant. Ein japanischer Punkrocker (!) wird Ingenieur, sein Büro arbeitet erstmal für andere jap. Audiounternehmen wie Zoom und baut dann lustige Quitschekisten-Synths & Sampler.

My all time fave has to be the Ensoniq ESQ-1. It's an early 80s 8-bit digital synth with a rich gorgeous analog filter.
I also love the Arturia Minifreak, the Sonicware Liven 8bit warps, the Yamaha SY77 (6op FM/rompler hybrid) and the Hydrasynth is really great as well.
