The Prophet Who Fell: Father Yod, the Source Family Cult, and the Hawaii Fall | Revisited: 042
Father Yod and the Source Family are one of the strangest chapters in 1970s cult history, Los Angeles counterculture, psychedelic rock, and Hawaii’s search for paradise gone wrong. This fully revisited episode follows James Edward Baker, the former Marine and Hollywood restaurateur who became Father Yod, leader of the Source Family and founder of The Source restaurant on the Sunset Strip. What began as raw vegetarian food, spiritual searching, music, and communal living grew into a closed world shaped by devotion, control, young followers, multiple wives, and one man’s claim to higher truth. When pressure built in Los Angeles, the family moved to Hawaii chasing a new Eden. Instead, they met island suspicion, unstable housing, financial pressure, internal doubt, and the hard reality that paradise was never theirs to claim. From Kauai to Hilo to Lanikai, the dream narrowed until August 25, 1975, when Father Yod attempted to hang glide from Oahu’s east side without proper training. His crash and death left the family fractured, grieving, and forced to ask what had been faith, what had been love, and what had been control. This episode is not just about a cult leader. It is about the people who followed him, the women asked to call surrender holy, the children raised inside someone else’s spiritual experiment, and the survivors who still carry complicated memories of harm, belonging, music, and loss. Ep.43 The Source Family (Father Yod)
In this episode of Hidden Cults, we examine the rise and fall of The Source Family, the Los Angeles commune led by Jim Baker, who renamed himself Father Yod and later Ya Ho Wha. What began in 1969 as a successful health food restaurant on the Sunset Strip evolved into a tightly structured spiritual movement built on discipline, devotion, and absolute loyalty to its earthly spiritual father. We follow Baker’s transformation from Marine veteran and businessman to charismatic patriarch, tracing the formation of the Mother House, the Ten Commandments of the Aquarian Age, the spiritual wife system, and the daily rituals that shaped life inside the commune. As the Family’s public image grew more theatrical and their teachings more apocalyptic, they sold the restaurant that funded their vision and relocated to Hawaii in pursuit of purity and self-sufficiency.Part 1 – The Making of Jim Baker (1922–1969)Part 2 – Becoming Father Yod (1969–1971)Part 3 – The Family System (1971–1973)Part 4 – Provocation and Expansion (1973–1974)Part 5 – Hawaii and Collapse (1974–1975)From silent compounds to subway attacks, from charismatic prophets to catastrophic ends, Hidden Cults is a documentary-style podcast that digs deep into the world's most extreme, elusive, and explosive fringe groups. My Name Was Mushroom: Wendy Baker’s Journey Beyond the Source Family Cult
Long before kale smoothies went mainstream, The Source Family was seducing Hollywood with vegan food, free love, and a guru who called himself Father Yod. This wasn’t just LA’s first vegan restaurant – it was a commune where long-haired devotees in white robes took ice-cold showers at dawn, meditated for hours, and followed strict spiritual rules under their bearded leader. Celebrities like John Lennon and Cher might have stopped by for a meal, but for many teen girls – often runaways – this place became home, for better or worse. Wendy Baker was one of those girls. At 14, she left a traumatic childhood behind for promises of love and enlightenment. Renamed Mushroom, she was swept into a life of chanting, raw vegan meals, and devotion to Father Yod. By sixteen, she had her first child; by nineteen, she was ready to escape. In this episode, Wendy shares what life was really like in the Source Family – from malnutrition and sleep deprivation to the ego-shaming that kept members silent. She talks about her journey out, her marriage to Bart, Father Yod’s son, and how writing her memoir, My Name Was Mushroom, helped her heal. For more on Wendy’s journey, check out her website (https://wendybakerauthor.com) and memoir My Name Was Mushroom.
