🌍 African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) The African penguin, also known as Cape penguin or South African penguin, is a medium-sized, flightless, aquatic bird with a distinctive black and white plumage. They have a black back and white belly, with a black band across their chest and unique pink patches above their eyes. African penguins are found only in the waters of southern Africa, living in large colonies on the coast and nearby islands. They are excellent swimmers, using their flipper-like wings to propel themselves through the water while hunting for fish and squid. On land, they waddle upright and can be quite clumsy. They are known for their loud, donkey-like braying calls. Conservation status: Critically Endangered (IUCN 3.1) 📷: Photo by Lifetravellerz via Pixabay JQRH

I'm adding a bonus #HeadShot for #BirdOfTheDay because I'm just starting to edit my South Africa photos, and I just finished with this lovely #SouthAfricanPenguin showing me its good side! I loved these little guys so much! #birds #WildlifePhotography #ECK

For #PinkMon I loved the bit of pink coloring on the faces of the #SouthAfricanPenguin. Such adorably comical birds! #birds #WildlifePhotography #ECK
A penguin is lying in a hole in the sand. It raises its head and looks at the camera. Its body is a textured black and its breast a smooth white. Its head is mostly black (including its beak), but there are white “eyebrows that come up from the nape of its neck. Over and around its eyes is an area of pure pink.

Rob’s brief for #BirdOfTheDay is #BestOfTheMonth. Choosing was hard since I was in #SouthAfrica and met so many new friends (but took mostly poor pictures! 😂). Here are a few favorites. #HadadaIbis #RedWingedStarling #SouthAfricanPenguin #DarkChantingGoshawk #travel #WildlifePhotography #ECK
Hadada Ibis. A light gray long-necked bird with a long curved beak. Its back is darker gray, and there are iridescent green patches on its wings. On the top of its beak there is a bright red segment close to its head. Red-winged Starling. A blue-black bird stretches up from short green grass. The tips of its wings are a russet orange. South African Penguin. A black-and-white penguin with pink around its eyes stands over its sleeping brown fuzzy chick. They are in a slight hollow in the beach sand. Dark Chanting-goshawk. A light gray raptor sits at the very top of a tree. It has a black tail and delicate gray and white striping on its breast. Its beak is short, hooked, and bright orange with a dark gray tip.
