1/2 Our team recently snapped these photos of #sphagnum mosses growing in re-wetted areas nr Holme Moss.

Sphagnum mosses can hold up to 20x their own weight in water, helping to hold water on the hills in times of both dry weather and extreme rainfall.

1/2 It's #WorldSoilDay - today we celebrate peat, a carbon-storing soil which can be found on moorlands across the Peak District and South Pennines. In the Peak District alone, 20 million tonnes of carbon is stored in peat.

1/2 That's a wrap on volunteer sphagnum planting days in 2025. This year around 20,000 sphagnum plugs have been planted in the #PeakDistrict and #SouthPennines by Moors for the Future Partnership volunteers, helping to work towards the target of over 1,500,000 for 2025-26.
