Canet de la Tallada is one of the airfields build by the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. You will find it 10 km south of the southern end of the Gulf of Roses. You can walk right through the air-raid shelter, but take a torch. #pyreneeshistory #spanishcivilwar

La Bola Negra: A Queer Epic Set Against Spain's Civil War and Modern LGBTQ+ Struggles
La Bola Negra, directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo (known as 'Los Javis'), is emerging as a major contender for Oscar glory, blending historical drama with contemporary LGBTQ+ narratives. The film, which has already won awards at Cannes, weaves together three interconnected stories set in Spain across different eras: 1932, 1937, and 2017. In 1932, a young man is rejected from an exclusive casino due to his suspected homosexuality; in 1937, a nationalist soldier develops feelings for a republican prisoner; and in 2017, a queer historian inherits an unfinished story by Federico García Lorca, which gives the film its title. The directors, who have previously focused on LGBTQ+ themes through lesbian and trans narratives, describe this as their most explicit exploration of queer desire and identity. They emphasize casting gay actors in gay roles, with singer Guitarricadelafuente making his acting debut as a love-struck soldier. The film's maximalist style, featuring spectacular set pieces and a blend of Spanish civil war drama with modern Grindr-style encounters, has drawn comparisons to 'the gay Titanic.' Ambrossi and Calvo, who have been working together for 13 years, discuss their journey from writing about LGBTQ+ characters to creating a film that directly addresses queer desire. They also reflect on Spain's cultural identity, noting the country's tendency to downplay its own achievements in arts and culture. The film, co-produced by Pedro Almodóvar's company, is set for a 47-day theatrical run in the US before streaming on Netflix, a record for the platform. It has already won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival and is poised for major Oscar nominations.
