The #StonoRebellion, beginning #ThisDayInHistory in 1739, was the largest #SlaveRevolt in a British mainland colony. #Slaves in #SouthCarolina marched under a "#Liberty!" banner, seized weapons, burnt plantations on the way to #SpanishFlorida, and killed 23 colonial militiamen.

Unconcerned with Spanish sovereignty, the United States invaded #SpanishFlorida to attack a community of escaped slaves. In the #BattleOfNegroFort, #ThisDayInHistory in 1816, a cannon ball struck the fort's magazine, killing 275 in a huge explosion. The survivors were enslaved.
