“The broom sweeps faster, and more thoroughly, than any straw broom can, your ladyship,” say I. “Imagine how much faster your maids could complete their work, if they had one of these.” The Margravine studies it. Ennen ends her pass and reaches down to close the knob again. Pale violet light seeps from the seams between metal plates: a problem yet to be solved. “How does it work?” Ennen starts to explain, but I know from experience that her explanation will barrel on through endless details that I find fascinating, but the Margravine may not. I touch her forearm—a signal she and I have developed to mean You are over-explaining. “The spark we have harvested moves the parts of the motor,” I say. “That’s the light you see. The motor drives the rest.” "Theurgy," says Ennen.

At the northern edge of the mine, there perched what might pass for a town—larger than Sensbury, but not by much. A cluster of mostly wooden buildings leaned weathered clapboard walls against each other. Gray slate roofs showed gaps here and there. Chipped green paint curled into barely recognizable letters: Copperknoll. Barring the pit, the land around was largely flat and bare. “They named the town,” said Quinceberry, “after the hill.” “What hill?” said Mr. Durth. “Precisely!”

They parted ways with the overhead rail. It veered off northward over tall, craggy hills, but on foot they would need to take the long way around. The woods grew thicker, houses sparser, path narrower. Boden stopped, lifting his head. “Find cover,” he muttered. Quinceberry looked up. “Hm?” He listened: Rapid footsteps. Crashing underbrush. And beyond them, the faint thrum of spark and the unmistakable clank of metal. Boden loosed the cords at his throat. He shoved the cloak into Quinceberry’s arms. “Find cover!” The runner crashing through the forest burst onto the path—a young man with dark hair, wearing a dark brown canvas jacket with a stylized locomotive embroidered in dirty yellow. “Mr. Morrow?” said Quinceberry. Boden didn’t relax, though. The metal noises approached fast. “Mr. Durth! I’m sorry, I—please help me!” Kier ducked behind Boden just as the metal thing burst through the trees. Thrax.

“Anything happens in the night, I’ll wake you to fight. I’m used to short sleep. But you’ll be no use if you’re spent.” Quinceberry raised an eyebrow, as if Boden had hit a nerve. “Very well, I shall heed your counsel, my friend. I have never been a constable. I’m sure you know best.” As Quinceberry unrolled his bedroll on the far side of the fire, a faint rumble stirred the air and shook the leaves. It grew louder, vibrating the earth itself. “Oh, for the gods’ sake,” Boden muttered. Quinceberry rose and gaped upward. One by one, pale violet lights flickered on along the railroad trestle. Lit from within, a train of sleek brass and blue-green glass hurtled lengthwise on the bronze rail, rumbling at a steady pace, loud enough to drown out speech. Lilac-hued lightning crackled behind. The stench of ozone drifted down in its wake. A slender, pale haunt in yellow silk leapt just before the train reached her, falling toward the forest and fading into wisps of smoke before she landed. The clatter and hum persisted till the train had passed. Then one by one, sparklights winked out behind it, each one an eyeblink of dying divinity, as the rumble and lightning faded off into the distance. Sputtering, Quinceberry pointed in the direction the train had gone. “That’s—that wasn’t—?” “—the train we were going to take,” said Boden. “Spark’s loaded.”

The Philosopher smiles grimly. “We promoted one from among their number. The Bloodhound title is retired, though. Irreplaceable, though now we have an Alaunt.” The Lady sighs. “I had hoped you might tell me they were all being retired. What are the Hounds, without the Bloodhound to—” “Until the final cull, we need them,” says the Philosopher. “Every one. The Grand Project. They are invaluable.” “Invaluable. Irreplaceable.” The Lady sets her cup down. “How many others those words once described as well.” Her fingers trace the neck of the teapot. “But I confess a certain curiosity, your wisdom. What brings you here today?” “You invited me. But I have always wanted to meet the benevolent Lady Lavoie.” The Philosopher raises her cup in a silent toast. Lady Lavoie raises hers with a bow of her head and a humble smile. “As I have always wanted to meet the architect of the theurgical revolution. You are magnificent, my darling. I do hope we may meet many, many more times over the years.”

As we leave the Margravine’s halls, Ennen says, “We did it!” “We did. Our first sponsor,” I say. “The first of many. Your work is astounding. We are on the brink of a new age. The Theurgical Age. Everyone is going to benefit from your engines.” “It’s not clockwork,” she says. I laugh. “You and I know that. But there are, admittedly, some parallels.” “It’s theurgy.” I nod. “But that’s not a word people understand, outside of—well, you and I. I like the Margravine’s term—sparkwork.” Ennen says, “We’re going to need more spark.”

“Are you acquainted with that perennial proverb, Turn sour milk into cheese?” Quinceberry glanced expectantly from one to the other. “Never heard it.” “Is it new?” Kiff didn’t even look up from the map. Quinceberry sighed. “Ancient as the hills. It means, turn every misfortune into fortune. It was a favorite axiom of one of my former sweethearts—anyway. That’s our plan.” Boden frowned. “How do we turn having a boat with no spark into having a boat with spark?” “No need to be crass,” said Quinceberry. Kiff’s face scrunched up. “So we… make cheese?” Quinceberry gave an exasperated sigh. “We turn this situation to our advantage.” Boden folded his arms. “How?” “I’m thinking,” Quinceberry said.

Thanks to God and your recent support, after a year of hard work and dedication amidst the complex conditions in Gaza, the team has begun a project to completely renovate the space and remove or mitigate the effects of the war, and implement Sparkwork in a humanitarian manner. This week, the space has been buzzing with activity, including construction, painting, outfitting, and maintenance, all in the hope of presenting the best possible image to the people and workers in Gaza, and to complete these projects by Ramadan. We hope to continue supporting students and workers, expanding our reach to benefit as many displaced people as possible in various ways. To everyone who contributed, shared, and donated for the students and staff, what you are doing is truly remarkable and has a real impact, not only in the donations themselves but also in building the most important investment: awareness, intellect, and humanity, and preparing the youth of the next generation. A magic item for use in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition tabletop role-playing game. This is a homebrew magic item created by Cloaks & Capes. Sparkwork Firefly Wondrous Item, legendary (requires attunement) “A tiny clockwork creation that looks like a Firefly. It is bigger than a normal firefly at roughly the length of two human hands from wing to wing. The bulb and source of its spark, is magical in nature.” This magical clockwork device is considered a familiar as if created by the Find Familiar spell, and it uses the Owl stat block. If this clockwork device is reduced to Hit Points it stops functioning, and can be repaired with the Mending cantrip if retrieved. Otherwise, it reappears in a space within 5 feet of you during the next dawn, restored to full Hit Points. Light in the Dark. It sheds Bright Light in a 20-foot radius and Dim Light for an additional 20 feet. You can use a Bonus Action to adjust the radius of the light, decreasing it by as little as 5 feet, turning it off, or shedding only Dim Light. 20 feet of Bright Light and 20 feet of Dim light is the maximum distance it can illuminate. Sparkbearer. The amount of Heroic Inspiration you can hold is increased by 1. In addition, at the end of a Long Rest, roll 1d6 and grant Heroic Inspiration equal to the result among creatures that you can see within range.
