My students were so excited about kinetics and spectrophotometer - some of the topics we covered in my class today. Often after my evening section I am exhausted but today I feel somehow pumped up. The joy of teaching keeps finding its way 😊

Other quibble: "Instructions might say “check with a spectrophotometer,” but a practiced scientist recognizes when a bubble or residual chemical is corrupting the reading."- nah bro, a practice scientist will tell you the nanodrop is a lying liar who lies ;-)

I got a new spectrophotometer — an actual scientific piece of kit, the CHNSpec DS-220!!! We'll be re-scanning the entire library slowly over the coming weeks, and I'm very excited about the capabilities of the new scanner!

I should figure this out.
Maybe our spectrophotometer is dying--its 17 years old and to my knowledge the lamp has never been replaced.

i have a bad habit of pulling out the spectrophotometer to entertain guests
I asked once whether beets are more or less purple than turmeric is yellow.
Chemist friend was around and 15 minutes of calculation later we determined turmeric is more than 100x as yellow as beets are purple.

fun fact you can use methylene blue as a pretty decent radiation dosimeter, the dye color bleaches fairly linearly with ionizing radiation dose, it's stable for a few hours, and you can use a spectrophotometer to measure absorption

Methylene blue is actually an oxidant, not an antioxidant (it is literally an oxidizer), and one of the risks is that it can cause massive oxidative stress to your cells/tissues. For some people, this can mean that taking methylene blue will make all of your red blood cells explode. Not even joking.

Colour readings taken by spectrophotometer from an early 20th c watercolour chart. Bright synthetic organics such as Rouge Phénicien & Rouge Geranium (notorious for light-induced fading) sit alongside ancient earth colours such as the Rouge Indien. Part of my research into Gwen John’s materials.
