Like this is kind of a joke, but unironically the storytelling of Piers and Marnie and Spikemuth, both written and unintentional, is some of the best writing the Pokemon series has ever accomplished and it's no fucking surprise they knew that and Piers takes up a ton of the story.

(Mercy HATED the job so they were happy to hand it over. They only kept it to gain money to help Piers & Spikemuth)
