It was one year ago today that Mom said goodbye
She had fought breast adenocarcinoma easily, but a T-cell abnormality in her marrow w/ splenomegaly in the preceding years flared up into a raging T lymphoma that spread over the whole body, draining life energy

She decided to go to sleep instead

Isolation, identification, and comparative genomic analysis of Vibrio harveyi as a causative agent for a skin ulcer disease of endangered fish Chinese bahaba (Bahaba taipingensis)
Chinese bahaba (Bahaba taipingensis) is a fish species endemic to China and listed as a Class I nationally protected wild animal. Although significant breakthroughs have been achieved in its artificial breeding, high mortality rates persist during cultivation. Beginning in August 2024, sustained mass mortalities occurred in artificially farmed Chinese bahaba at a farm in Guangdong Province. Diseased fish exhibited pronounced skin ulcers, ascites, gastroenteritis, and splenomegaly. Histopathological examination revealed severe necrotizing gastroenteritis, gill necrosis and edema, muscle congestion with inflammatory cell infiltration, hepatic congestion with marked vasculitis, renal interstitial necrosis with tubular atrophy, and abundant melanomacrophage centers in the spleen. Based on biochemical characterization and whole-genome phylogenomic analysis, the isolated strain HCY1 was identified as Vibrio harveyi. Artificial infection experiments with this strain resulted in 100% mortality and reproduced clinical signs similar to those in naturally infected fish. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that HCY1 remained susceptible to florfenicol and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, but was resistant to multiple antibiotics, including β-lactams and tetracyclines. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that HCY1 carries various antimicrobial resistance genes primarily conferring resistance to β-lactam and tetracycline antibiotics, consistent with the phenotypic resistance profile. The strain also harbored numerous virulence genes, including complete type III and type VI secretion systems (T3SS and T6SS), tlh, hap/vvp, and rtxB. Its plasmids encoded multiple virulence-enhancing genes, such as mcpA, pal, and esiB. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic investigation of a disease outbreak in cultured Chinese bahaba, and provides valuable insights for disease control and population conservation of this endangered species. ### Competing Interest Statement K. Spatial profiling of the spleen in mouse and human myelofibrosis reveals complement-driven immune-stromal interactions as a therapeutic target
Spatial profiling of the spleen in mouse and human myelofibrosis reveals complement-driven immune-stromal interactions as a therapeutic target
Schneider, Dussiau, and colleagues show that splenomegaly in myelofibrosis reflects active remodeling of the splenic stromal niche, not only extramedullary hematopoiesis. Reticular cell-driven complement activation disrupts lymphoid architecture and promotes fibrosis, identifying C3 as a targetable stromal axis.

Anti-science idiots like RFK Jr are loudly claiming that the infant in Pennsylvania died of a bust spleen and not measles.

Guess what? Pediatric measles causes splenomegaly, the acute inflammation of the spleen leading to ruptured or lacerated spleen.
August 28, 2026 at 10:45 PM
Splenomegaly in pediatric measles was reported literally 100 years ago
Over half of children with measles have enlarged spleens (Am J Dis Child 1926;31:26-30)
August 28, 2026 at 8:39 PM
It's not common for measles to cause splenomegaly, but it can; infant splenic rupture in general is vanishingly rare; splenic rupture in measles without splenomegaly is rare; after a spleen has ruptured, it can be hard to tell from the autopsy whether it was enlarged or not.

Those are all true.

*Infant spleens do not spontaneously combust*

Ruptured spleen in an infant is very, very rare.

Measles infection can cause splenomegaly and rupture.

Let's get everyone vaccinated with MMR to protect babies who are still too young to receive the vaccine.

Splenomegaly is a rare measles complication, and an enlarged spleen ruptures more easily. Per the coroner though, the infant’s spleen wasn’t enlarged and trauma is favored. What happened here isn’t clear yet. Quoted in this piece www.post-gazette.com/news/health/...

6/11 This led us to the complement pathway: and particularly C3 as a potential therapeutic target.

Targeting C3 reduced splenomegaly, restored splenic architecture, dampened inflammatory and fibrotic programs, and even reduced bone marrow fibrosis.

The combination of massive splenomegaly and cytopenias (especially plts less than 20,000-30,000) suggests primary marrow failure since hypersplenism alone is unlikely to cause such severe deficits.
August 24, 2026 at 9:00 PM
The combination of splenomegaly (even when noted incidentally on imaging) and a high WBC should raise suspicion.

The presence of basophilia in a left shift that spans across all myeloid cells are classic findings in CML.
August 23, 2026 at 9:00 PM
Around 85% of patients diagnosed with CML are diagnosed in the “indolent chronic phase.” CML is often discovered incidentally. When the patient is symptomatic, they might present with fatigue, weight loss, or LUQ discomfort due to splenomegaly.

Unlike hereditary angioedema, it develops later in life and is often driven by a lymphoproliferative disorder — most commonly SMZL — or an autoimmune condition.

SMZL is indolent and usually presents with massive splenomegaly and cytopenias, without notable peripheral neuropathy.
