Guys, it wasn't the Canary's voice! It was Spotswood's voice the whole time!

As a diversion from <waves hands around> I’ve been reading Stephen Spotswood’s Pentecost and Parker series. Historical mysteries set in the 1940’s, after the war featuring two women detectives. One has MS. The other was formerly with a circus. I’m enjoying them. ⚡️📚

Of the less well-known names on Sarah’s list, I’ll very enthusiastically back up her praise for Stephen Spotswood, Sara Gran, and Dolores Hitchens. Spotswood’s books are somewhat cozy without being cloying, Gran’s are like no other mysteries I know, weird and unforgettable.

Also, Dick Spotswood's whole piece (that the "unfathomable" quote comes from) was just about how he was not able to understand the legislative language of the bill.

As of now, I am embarked on a long weekend that will involve a lot of fireside reading time. Here’s what’s going along.

Plus a stack of New Yorkers for the hot tub.

Originally in the late 80s we were going to build Melbourne Museum on the Queen Victoria Hospital site, but instead they sold that site and used that money to fund the new museum on Southbank. The idea was to have a ferry running from there linking to Spotswood's science museum.

The name is fom British governor Alexander Spotswood's Blue Mountains expedition

Him and some of his friends rode to Elkton, then knight themselves "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe"

Today's awards ceremony sees kids knighted with a sword.

The thing is the expedition never made it to WV

I was blabbing to a friend about how great @bytylerhayes.bsky.social's The Imaginary Corpse is until they went and bought it. They sent me this. I have never been prouder of my little book than it being recommended for people who liked Tyler's book. Got to be one of the most underrated Fantasies.

Read my response to Dick Spotswood's piece about the Alto Tunnel in the Marin IJ.

In it, I correct several of the clear errors he made in his recent column.

This was 3+ years in the making and would not have been possible without Erica Spotswood's leadership. The paper is available open access: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Spotswood's overall point is illustrative.

He has clearly forgotten that there was organized resistance to this project, including an appeal of the initial approval.

The city moved forward with it anyway, and now everyone views it as totally fine, and it did not, in fact, ruin the city.

Have you read Stephen Spotswood's delightful queer noirs?

I adore the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley, Stephen Spotswood's Pentecost and Parker books, anything by Mia P. Manansala. Gigi Pandian's books are fun. Good on ya for doing something cozy for your mom!

🐾 Spotswood’s owner has gone on holiday without him.

He’s being a good boy at Grandma’s. He has a nice room, a new friend and plenty of time for sleeping.

But there’s just one problem - he misses Lisa. ❤️

And of course, Stephen Spotswood’s publisher stopped publishing the equally amazing Pentecost & Parker series (queer NYC post-WW2), and, like, really, I know we can’t have all the nice things, but still.
