This Day in #History 79 Mt. Vesuvius erupts, burying the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae and killing thousands.

(New research in 2018 suggests the eruption occurred around this date, not the previously used August 24.)

Stabiae was a luxurious holiday resort on the Bay of Naples for wealthy Romans who went for the social scene and the natural thermal baths. Like Pompeii, it was buried in ash by Vesuvius in 79AD.

This incredible fresco of its port was found in one of the villas.

Actually, at least two of them (Diana and Flora are from Stabiae, on the bay of Naples., now in Museo Nazioneale di Napoli.😊

When we compare the #Oppian #mosaic to this spectacular maritime #fresco from #Stabiae, the conclusion is clear. The Great Mosaic under the Baths of Trajan was a lavish Fourth Style frescoed room translated into #mosaic form, but on a gigantic scale that dwarfed the viewer, certainly on purpose.

Such a peaceful place. Totally alone (one guard) in Villa San Marco, Stabiae. Magic. Quiet.

🌸Flora🌸

Sydney feels like it’s jumped straight from winter to summer these last few days, but really it’s Spring in the air.

This fresco fragment is often identified as the goddess Flora and was found in the Villa of Ariadne in Stabiae. Now held in the MAN Napoli.

Pliny the Elder successfully navigated the fleet into danger, famously declaring, "Fortune favors the bold" when his helmsman panicked. He made landfall at Stabiae to rescue his friend Pomponianus. Unfortunately, the wind shifted, trapping their ships at the shore.

#OnThisDay 79 AD, eruption of Vesuvius in southern Italy which destroyed the cities of Pompeii, Stabiae, and Herculaneum - which reminds me of the etymology of volcano.

Volcanos are named for Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking.
