StableFX utilizes request for quote pricing from multiple liquidity providers and smart-contract settlement to ensure simultaneous exchange of currencies. Circle is providing the underlying software and settlement infrastructure, not holding customer funds. The key innovation is in the settlement process, where both sides of a trade fund a smart contract, guaranteeing that both legs settle together or neither does. This payment-versus-payment structure significantly reduces principal risk, a common issue in traditional FX. Institutions can choose immediate settlement or use programmable windows for netting trades before final settlement. StableFX supports various stablecoins, including USDC and EURC, as well as tokens representing other major currencies. Circle's model positions StableFX as back-end financial infrastructure, with participating firms responsible for their own licensing and compliance. This initiative tests the viability of regulated institutions using stablecoin rails for cross-currency transactions and settlement risk management outside traditional market hours.
