Noted: One of 13 former standardbred racehorses on the meat wagon had been owned 3 years ago by attorney Michael L. Torcello, an a member of the boards of directors with the Western NY Harness Horsemen's Association and the US Trotting Association. He didn't respond to requests for comment.

I also really love the pinto Standardbred and the mustang, though the latter's mold isnt as finely detailed and it's a little mushy as a result. The Deluxe set also has ugly little beady eyes on all the horses so I need to fix that someday lol

Also baffling to me is that this guy graduated from vet school and still decided that the best life choice was to relocate to NYC and sink his life savings into this unstable (ha!) industry.

An aside: Chocolate is probably a Standardbred, yeah? Not an OTTB? The latter would be an exciting choice.
Inside the Park, I met Ahmet Bilici, who's been driving a carriage for twenty-three years. He wore a top hat incongruously paired with cargo shorts and was feeding his bay horse, Chocolate, a bucket of oats. Where previous generations were predominantly Irish or Italian, Bilici, like many drivers these days, is from Turkey. He was raised on a farm in Hatay and got his veterinary degree in Istanbul. He came to New York in 2001 ("American Dream, you know?"), but his vet license wasn't recognized here, so he worked in a supermarket before becoming a carriage driver. "This is top attraction in the world, Central Park horse carriage," he said. "Like the World Trade Center, Statue of Liberty." Initially, he drove for hire, but he saved up his earnings and, in 2016, purchased his own medallion for around half a million dollars. (He bought Chocolate, a retired racehorse, the next year.) He hoped to pass the medallion down to his two sons and, someday, to his grandchildren. That's why the proposed ban so angered him. Although Romanch's Law includes career retraining (M.T.A. jobs, sightseeing-bus-tour positions), Bilici wondered how the city could possibly repay his life savings and the generational wealth he'd envisioned. "The city, they give us license," he said. "So city is supposed to protect us." If the bill passes, he half joked, "maybe I'm going to jump down the Empire State Building." Or sue.

The 15-year-old Standardbred has served with the Columbus Police Mounted Unit since 2023. Council approved her retirement into the care of her longtime handler, Officer Brian Newsome.

My mare (middle with the lovely round butt) is the enforcer of the Dark Bay Mare Squad. She is especially fond of 31 yr old Standardbred with a knee she’s next to. She stands watch when her friend lays down to sunbathe and snooze and will not tolerate shenanigans near her friend. She will fuck u up
