You can use this path as part of a giant loop connecting Cutler Park to the Blue Heron Trail in Needham, Riverdale Park in Dedham, Millennium Park in West Roxbury to Brook Farm and then Helen Heyn in Newton before walking back to Needham.

The Helen Heyn Riverway is part DCR-managed riverbanks and part Newton parklands, named for a Newton Conservator.

In this heat, paddling the Charles through shade seems like a good idea. The Elm Bank Reservation hosts the Massachusetts Horticultural Society within the 18th century mansion and its gardens contained within Reservation Road, but it also has preserved wild spots along the river.

In this area that had been marshes, in 1870 it was created to supplement a growing Boston's water supply. The water itself is off-limits because it's still an emergency source of water, but it's a perfect place to walk and chat before or after dinner.

The Department of Recreation and Conservation maintains the beach, the bathrooms and the Head Island Causeway that creates a walking loop around Pleasure Bay: Castle Island to Head Island to Carson Beach and back to the free-but-packed Castle Island parking lot.

Hard by North Brook and CSX's Fitchburg Secondary Line runs the Lester G. Ross Dam, a DCR flood control dam in Berlin, MA. This two-mile mostly flat loop trail over and around the dam, built in 1974, begins and ends on West Street (Route 62).

This DCR property was donated to the state by Malden's first mayor and is maintained by the city in partnership with the state. But what you'll want to know about is the hill in the first photo called "Seven Bumps," which is perfect for sledding.
