Some other ways to make more lasting cosplays:

- staystitching seams like necks and side stress points
- choose quality fabrics and pre-wash those you can
- keep seam allowances in areas you may need to take out into the future and press them accordingly
- stay tape on stretch seams

Started staystitching last night but didn’t get very far since I had to wake up early for Thanksgiving prep!

The silk chiffon for Lisa’s #NeoVictorianBlouse is so fine as to be more idea than substance. So I’m starting it off by staystitching every. Single. Edge.

if your machine is acting weird, rethread it. maybe more than once

if your fabric is thin and wants to wad up in the feed dogs put a lil paper under it. you can tear it away later and it helps SO much to get a seam started when the machine wants to chew it up

don't skip staystitching

on the subject of staystitching, since a couple patterns I'm working just made me mad about it

it does not go 1/4" from the edge. it goes 1/8" to the edge side of your seamline (so, 1/2" from the edge if you're working a pattern with a standard 5/8" seam allowance)

Proud of myself for all of the technical work that went into this, and for how much I did myself (sewed every seam excepting the buttonholes, the sleeve insertion, handsewing the trim, and some staystitching, which my mother graciously did to save time).

It’s back to work on Nick’s #5PanelDressShirt. I’m not an absolutist about couture #sewing and will happily use a machine for many things. But for stuff like staystitching these sleeve placket openings where even my Singer 201 tuned to its gentlest is too much tension, I hand pick the stitches.

Hey there! You baste the neckline (the single layer of fabric - usually within the seam allowance - sometimes called staystitching) to prevent it from stretching out - because curves are way stretchier than straight lines. After that, sew the shoulder seams. And for sure you can use your zig zag!

Instead of adding another layer of fabric I cut down where the band was meant to go then stitched a bias cut piece back on, staystitching a certain way to make it look like an additional layer.
After some more sashiko it's looking closer to the ref.
