to clarify the roles of stochasticity in aging and in age prediction. We argue that aging clocks are reflecting the very mechanisms of aging.

No. The stochasticity is not important. Temperature and pressure would still be meaningless for a single atom (and meaningful for a group of them) even if they worked using fully deterministic Newtonian physics.

stochasticity in their output, while algorithms are, by strict definition, deterministic

I use "algorithm" because people understand it from social media, where it did start out as a deterministic algorithm and, as the neural networks got more complex, became more of a heuristic sort of thing

Radiolab has a playful episode on stochasticity radiolab.org/podcast/9168...
Stochasticity
How stochasticity—a wonderfully smarty-pants word for randomness—drives our lives and the patterns we see around us.

The adaptive stochasticity hypothesis shorturl.at/clz02 Bottom line: heightened stochasticity makes brains robust to random/targeted attacks, but more often results in non-normative phenotypes

Well, it could just be the processes of development themselves. They're noisy. There's just a lot of stochasticity and sometimes that can push development down one pathway versus another. journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

Bizarrely, I have gotten Wordle in *TWO* for THREE DAYS STRAIGHT.

Meanwhile, Radiolab re-released their old "Stochasticity" episode just to make sure I don't get *too* excited about it.

Hot take: teaching popgen with diploid derivations instead of haploid is both needlessly complicated and gives the misleading impression drift comes from sexual reassortment and isn’t an inevitable product of any stochasticity

The other day driving I listened to a local radio station for a while, just to some music on the radio, and it made me contemplate what a *real* loss in serendipity and stochasticity the streaming/on demand era has brought us.

Probably worth adding that the issue isn't stochasticity per se, so much as the stochasticity being, apparently, fundamental, not emergent. And, the stochasticity arising from a weird probabilistic process that involves negative and imaginary numbers.

What is also interesting is that this highlights a certain stochasticity in the attempted extermination of trans people and transness, that is less in the forefront in other genocidal processes. These political authorities want to wash their hands in innocence by making sure seemingly unconnected
I say intentionally or unintentionally and I get people commenting on posts all the time saying "these weren't suicides, they murdered those kids"

But the political authorities of our day genuinely believe they are doing good by withdrawing care and instead insulate themselves from trans suffering
I founded Trans Safety Network on the basis that one of the key things we needed to do under the anti trans backlash was document and highlight the organisation of harm occurring to trans people. Understanding that such harm is the product of organised powers whether intentionally or unintentionally

Except…..LLMs are still stochastic parrots, heh. Part of the whole point is that that is super powerful. I get that people don’t understand what stochasticity means etc., but something you don’t understand isn’t something that’s incorrect.
ChatGPT is not an LLM btw, it’s a system.

This is an incredibly cool study!

It links neural signaling of nutritive state to policy complexity. When nutrient-deprived, animals reduce the state-dependence of their policy (lower policy complexiy) and increase locomotor arousal (higher action stochasticity).
Policy complexity is expensive. How does the brain regulate its investment of cognitive capacity? Our newest paper is on BioRxiv! We examine hypothalamic orexin (and MCH!) -producing neurons for their role in regulating the complexity decision policies. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Neurometabolic signaling and control of policy complexity
Cognition and adaptive behavior emerge from neural information processing. This must operate within finite metabolic constraints, since neural information processing is metabolically expensive. While ...

it is built into the sampler, and more or less has to be b/c if it's built into the weights then applying stochasticity at the end dewatermarks it.
