On August 26th, local activists, leaders, and champions for women’s reproductive freedom gathered for Women’s Equality Day and to Unite for Justice. “Women’s Equality Day” was a whole-community Sunday morning service at the Unitarian Universalist Church in downtown St. Petersburg. The Sunday morning service included feminist spirituality, the role of government — including the courts — in reaching gender equity, and lifting up women’s voices in song and poetry. The service was immediately followed by a “Unite for Justice” solidarity walk -- one of hundreds of events happening across the nation to demonstrate commitment to our freedom and our future in demanding that the U.S. Senate stop Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to a lifelong appointment on the U.S. Supreme Court. The Walk was co-sponsored by Progress Florida, Pinellas National Organization for Women (NOW), Planned Parenthood St. Pete Leadership Action Team, Women's March Pinellas, and UniteWomen.org® FL. The Unite for Justice solidarity walk was in reaction to the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. “Donald Trump has long promised to only nominate a justice who will end Roe v. Wade and criminalize abortion and Trump has found his man in Brett Kavanaugh,” said Amy Weintraub, Reproductive Rights Program Director for Progress Florida. “We can’t and won’t go back to the days when abortion was illegal in this country. We know what’s at stake in this fight: our most precious and fundamental rights. Brett Kavanaugh will not only work to end Roe and criminalize abortion, he will rule to gut health care, voting rights, LGBTQ rights, environmental protections, workers’ rights, and immigrant rights. We're walking in solidarity to urge our senators to vote No on Kavanaugh and protect the freedom and reproductive rights of Florida women and families.”

On August 26, all across the country, Americans will stand united in commitment to our freedom and our future to demand that the U.S. Senate stop Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination for a lifelong appointment to the Supreme Court. In Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump chose a nominee who not only has extremist, ultra-conservative legal views on a range of issues, but who has repeatedly argued that the Supreme Court should put the president above the law. Donald Trump is at the center of a criminal investigation, and he should not be allowed to pick his own judge and jury. Kavanaugh would rule against reproductive freedom, health care, the environment, voting rights, workers’ rights, LGBTQ rights, and immigrant rights for generations. Senators in all fifty states must listen to their constituents, do their jobs to uphold the will of the people, protect the soul of our country and Constitution, and block this nomination.
