#Storegga
adding for the anglophones, storegga is norwegian and means the great edge. pretty straightforward really, storegga is indeed a great edge.

"Propagation of the Storegga tsunami in the southeastern North Sea" is published in Quaternary Research Advances today. Open access paper (doi.org/10.1016/j.qs...) examining the degree to which the tsunami from the 8150 BP Storegga slide would have been able to reach the coasts of Denmark+Germany.

And if you think, okay, geology may not be boring but NORTHERN EUROPEAN geology certainly is - please behold the madness of the Storegga tsunami!

I thought I knew the story of the "lost world" off the east coast of Britain, inhabited by Mesolithic people until rising sea waters engulfed it around 8,000 years ago...

But I didn't know about the *tsunami*.

Holy hell.

Our new paper out now in QSA models the Storegga tusnami wave using more realistic palaeobathymetry based on the most recent glacio-isostatic modelling outputs for the North Sea, and shows that significant wave propagation south of Dogger Bank is extremely unlikely.

One of my co-authors has posted a nice animation showing propagation of the #Storegga #tsunami on the palaeobathymetry 8000 BP (left) and the present day North Sea (right). The tsunami loses its power as the sea becomes shallow and the wave diminishes towards the coast of DK/DE.

After the slow ravages of rising seas, was anyone still living in the now-islands of Doggerland on this day?

Unclear!

cambridge.org/core/journal...

But it's a safe bet there were many people along coastlines, perhaps in settlements like Star Carr.

Very, *very* bad news for them.

The name of this event is the STOREGGA SLIDE.

And yes, that is *another* epic name for a band, just like this one: bsky.app/profile/mike...

Geology may literally be rock, but it's clearly metal as well.

The name for this astounding event is the ZANCLEAN MEGAFLOOD:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanclea...

I've put it in All Caps because, what a hilariously epic name. I burst out laughing when I read it.

Anyone searching for a name for their new rock band?

The 'Storegga Slides' were a series of submarine landslides where 300km of Norway's coastline broke off into the Norwegian Sea, releasing a mega-tsunami that could have been 20-40 meters (65-130 ft) high.

It would have scoured Doggerland, wiping it flat, killing everything in its path.
A giant tsunami may have wiped out Stone Age populations in Britain 8,200 years ago, and scientists say a similar natural disaster could hit the islands again
A landslide triggered the Storegga tsunami 8,200 years ago. Researchers want to know if it caused a population decline that happened around then.

Interesting paper about the Holocene Storegga tsunami, caused by a large submarine landslide off the coast of Norway: it
resulted in run-up heights of up to 3–6 m around mainland UK & coincided with a large decline in the Mesolithic population in N. Britain.🧪⚒️

And so,the Storegga Slide event deputies a slower version....
Bleakly funny that what so many in British politics seem to envisage is a scenario in which we go 'we're too small to stop climate change ourselves' and rather than going 'so we will spend even more money on mitigation', the planet agrees to put all this unpleasantness behind us.

So how did this landmass *become* the North Sea? Well, the Ice Age was ending: giant ice sheets were melting, sea levels were rising. The area was bound to be flooded, but 2 events may have accelerated the disappearance of Doggerland in the space of a few years.

One terrible day, the edge of Norway's continential shelf collapsed, creating a 180-mile-long underwater landslide.

Hundreds of cubic miles of moving debris pushed against the sea, sending colossal waves in all directions...

And one descended on the remnants of Doggerland.

It is easier to see at low tide, I believe. My youngest was taken there on a field trip with her geography class at school.

It's also a wildlife reserve, well worth a visit.

Daybreak in the wreck of Dogger. Gulls drifting
over the slowly rising sea. Seals hauled out
on sandbanks, bleached ribs of stranded whales.
Dunlin and knot, swarming the mudflats,
armies of silt-spearing godwit and whaup.
