On 7 April 1965, ITN's Peter Woods reported from Offutt Airforce Base in Omaha, Nebraska, on the United States Strategic Air Command (SAC), the nerve centre from which the United States' nuclear arsenal was controlled. From inside the control room of the Air Command headquarters, Woods saw how America's nuclear deterrent capability was constantly monitored - and was given a sense of the process by which a retaliatory thermonuclear strike would be ordered in the event of war with the Soviet Union. He also spoke to SAC pilot Captain Larry Moen and his wife, Mrs Moen, about how it felt to be on the frontline of America's nuclear defences. Did it weigh on the captain's mind that he might one day be called on to unleash the full, world-ending might of America's thermonuclear arsenal? Not particularly, he told Woods.
