There is a concept known to many gardeners called "stratification."
Some plants' seeds don't open until they are frozen for a while, or on fire, or until other conditions are met.
Cold stratification is best known, where you sow seeds in the winter ...or put them in the fridge to simulate winter.

Disappointing to see this news. The domain system was already a great, equitable solution for verification. Blue checkmarks for “notability” only serve social stratification and seem like a feature mostly requested by self-important people desperate for status.

Lots of seeds need cold stratification. But to successfully germinate, THESE require first warm, then cold stratification. Outdoors, you would plant them in late summer and hope for germination in spring. It may be that we end up doing that after all, but first, we’re gonna fake it.
