I was introduced to the divine Geraldine Fitzgerald (today would have been her birthday) when she was performing Streetsongs at the St. Nicholas Theatre in Chicago.
"Didn't we work together at the Long Wharf?" she asked me.
"No," I said. "But I wish we had."

Before there was Patti LuPone at Les Mouches there was Geraldine Fitzgerald at Reno Sweeney.
Fitzgerald, then 64, would do evening performances of Eugene O'Neill's A Touch of the Poet on Broadway before heading downtown to do midnight shows of her Streetsongs cabaret in 1978.

It was just a remarkable and unexpected later-career moment for an incredible theatre artist.
And when Geraldine gets out her straw boater, I ascend.

Shoutout to the time GF brought her Streetsongs show to Chicago and I was introduced to her after a performance.
"Didn't we work together at the Long Wharf?" she asked, sparkling and dazzling.
"No, but I wish we had" was all I could figure out to say in response.
