There was a different emphasis on creativity, where people deemed genius were given free reign. "Stroheim" is where the anecdote comes from but suggests a superior/subordinate relationship. Thalberg was a good guy and fine producer. When he died, Groucho said "the fun had gone out of filmmaking."

You can't help but love bits and pieces from the "Golden" era, whether true in whole or not. On the other hand, today the true cineaste remembers and discusses von Stroheim while dismissing Thalberg.
