Another beauty of an image from our Nematostella stinging cell reporter line @mgstowers.bsky.social @stowersinstitute.bsky.social!

Really in love with this reporter line from my #PostDoc work in Gibson lab @stowersinstitute.bsky.social!

New Nematostella transgenic slowly but surely on the way! Any guesses?

A Friday feast of brine shrimp for this one month old sea anemone, which is showing off its fluorescing tentacles in both red and green.

Very glad these new dual reporter animals are happy (and hungry)!

Even at a few days old, these sea anemone planulae are already covered in stinging cells! The stingers of these young Nematostella are marked with a fluorescent green.

This sea anemone holds some serious stinging power around their mouth!

📷 Transgenic Nematostella where green marks developing and mature stinging cells, which are densely packed around the mouth.

This is one of my favorite HCR images, not only because it is beautiful but because it was one of the first 6 color HCR FISH experiments we imaged. It showed me what was possible for studying stinging cell biology, and has led to several ongoing projects!

This week's #MicroscopyMonday shows the expression pattern of 6 members of an important family of structural genes in stinging cells. These are shown in different colors across the larvae from the sea anemone Nematostella.(@mgstowers.bsky.social Lab)

First postdoc paper and first Nematostella project!

By using the dynamic expression pattern of minicollagens, we describe the transcriptional profile during biogenesis for two major stinging cell types: nematocytes and spirocytes

Minicollagen expression dynamics reveal a transcriptional program for cnidogenesis in the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis
Cnidae are explosive harpoon-like organelles localized within stinging cells, or cnidocytes, of the phylum Cnidaria (jellyfish, hydroids, sea anemones, and corals). These unique Golgi-derived vesicula...

When I bring starlet sea anemones to events, I ask kids what these animals look like under the microscope. Often I get told: sea monster!

Looking at the mouth of this reporter animal, I can see why.
