Even within formal american english writing, grammar is not universal. The big three styleguides contradict each other, field-specific grammatical conventions will contradict all of them, and no one agrees on how many commas you should be using. It's fine. Accept flexibility into your heart.

This might be the case, however, the AP Styleguide is not just supposed to be the "CYA guide," but the minimum standard for journalistic publication. In house styleguides might have unique eccentricities, but they're all supposed to use the AP guide as the default upon which they build.
I suppose there’s the written style guide which we have for show (the CYA guide), but in situations that count it’s overruled by the unwritten style guide, whose tacit message is “Thou shalt not call a white person or institution on their racism.”
