Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born #OTD in 1910. He found an upper limit on the mass of stable white dwarf stars.

Above the Chandrasekhar Limit – about 1.4 solar masses – electron degeneracy pressure cannot prevent a stellar remnant’s gravitational collapse into a neutron star or black hole. 🧪 🔭

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and his uncle C. V. Raman form a rare Nobel legacy in one family.

Raman won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering the Raman Effect, and Chandrasekhar followed decades later with the 1983 Nobel Prize for his profound work on the structure and evolution of stars.

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born OTD in 1910. He established an upper limit on the mass of stable white dwarf stars. Above this Chandrasekhar Limit – about 1.44 solar masses – stars eventually explode and then collapse into a neutron star or black hole. 🧪 🔭
