The Magician: willpower, illusion, deception, cunning

Woe, first art post of 2026 be upon ye! Here's a piece I made for a fun OC tarot card project last year, featuring Vespertine in his (subject to change) design for Sunder the Sky ✨

🎨 #bexarttag #SunderTheSky #OCsky
A tarot card for The Magician featuring my original character Vespertine. He is a slender man with purple skin, four horns, long dark hair, and a tail, wearing a black sleeveless top with golden geometric elements and black trousers underneath a long orange robe with a green belt. He holds a glowing magical scroll above his head and points to the ground with his other hand. Behind him, a city with spiralling towers is visible against a night sky, distorted by glitch-like effects.

Project announcement! ✨

I'm currently working on the first draft of my illustrated fantasy novel, under the working title Sunder the Sky! There's still a LOT to do, but while I work on it, art and snippets will be posted under the tag #SunderTheSky. Please stay tuned! 💜👀

🎨 #bexarttag
Semi-abstract illustration of a dark castle with tall spires floating in a darkened sky with clouds lit by the sunset below. A crescent moon hangs partially shattered into pieces above the castle, with stars visible in the crescent, indicating that this is not an ordinary moon. Roiling clouds below give way for a glowing winged figure plunging out of the sky. The title text reads 'Sunder the Sky' with my name, Bex Read, underneath.

Close to the Sun ☀️

I won't be posting EVERY picture from my OC pinup zine, but I was too happy with how this one turned out not to share! Raine in their favourite place in the world (apart from on Ez's lap) - the good ship Blue Morpho 🌊

🎨 #bexarttag #OCsky #SunderTheSky
Illustration of my original character Raine, climbing the rigging of a ship and shielding their eyes to look out over the sea with a smile. Raine is a non-binary humanoid figure - but with a short fluffy tail - with long brown hair in a yellow bow, freckles, a cropped white shirt showing off their abs, and loose black trousers with a purple and turquoise sash around their waist. Behind them is a bright blue sky with large, fluffy clouds.

The first completed reference sheet for my WIP novel, Sunder the Sky - featuring our primary protagonist and one of my most beloved blorbos, Quil! ✨

I'll be working on the rest over time, so please stay tuned! 👀

🎨 #bexarttag #OCsky #SunderTheSky
Reference sheet for my original character Quil, a non-binary character with light skin, shoulder-length red hair, horns, a white shirt, purple-and-gold corset/belt with a star design, black trousers and black boots. Pictured is a front and back view, a close-up bust of them smiling, a book with a design of an orange tree branch on the front and multiple bookmarks, and a blue-and-gold crystalline staff. On the left is a colour palette. Text on the right reads: Aquila 'Quil' Clarimond, they/he, 20 years old, 5'4". Brought up on the sunny Azure Peninsula to a farming family, Quil has always had aspirations beyond tending fruit and fields. Fascinated by magic from a young age, their goal has always been to become a mage. Entering into Alencia’s prestigious magic academy seemingly on a fluke has made them the subject of scrutiny and derision, hardening a heart that already struggled to form bonds with others. Entrusted with experimental research by their enigmatic mentor, Quil begins to see a future in which their dream may one day be realised - until disaster sends them fleeing the Academy beneath the cover of night, destined for the Wastes: the origin of the world-changing Cataclysm, and a ruined landscape from which none have ever returned alive.

#WIPSnips August 26th - 'Symbol'

In today's snippet, Ez's day goes from bad to worse

#WriteSky #WritingPrompts #SunderTheSky
He steeled himself, removing his hand from his face and looking up to meet the eyes of the person standing above him. She wore a pale orange tunic trimmed with deep red, capped with silver pauldrons and embroidered with the symbol of a crown encircling a narrow spire - the city’s most recognisable landmark. The guard force of Crownhaven. Shit.

#WIPSnips September 30th - 'Guard'

In which Quil is fuelled by spite. This will happen again

#WritingPromps #WriteSky #SunderTheSky
“Your Majesty,” the guards said in unison, performing the Aldellian salute before dropping to their knees. When Quil did not move, torn between fear and spite, the black-haired captain said in a low and icy voice, “Kneel.” Their body was ice, locked in a self-made stasis; they simply stared into the queen’s eyes, a maelstrom of emotion storming behind their own. “I said kneel.” The guard kicked Quil’s knees out from under them and they fell hard to the ground, almost striking their chin on the hard floor with their wrists cuffed behind their back. Swallowing back a curse, they gritted their teeth and bowed their head as the captain resumed his position beside them.
