Supervrijwilligers Jacob en Alfred misten in totaal drie edities van muziekfestival Sunsation in Middelstum. Vrijdag begint editie nummer 36. „Als je wilt dat er iets gebeurt in het dorp moet je zélf actie ondernemen.”

Carnival Cruise Line has opened bookings for Carnival Tropicale, a roughly 183,900-gross-ton ship scheduled to begin sailing from Galveston on April 15, 2028. The fifth and final Excel-class vessel will operate four-, five-, six- and eight-night cruises to the Western Caribbean, The Bahamas and Mexico. Steel cutting has begun at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany. The approximately 5,200-lower-berth ship will join Carnival Jubilee in Galveston, Texas’ only cruise homeport. ## Where Carnival Tropicale will sail Carnival Tropicale’s deployment includes Celebration Key, RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, Isla Tropicale and Puerta Maya from Carnival’s Paradise Collection. Other scheduled ports include Nassau, Progreso and Cozumel, depending on the departure date and cruise length. “Guests can now begin planning their vacations aboard this incredible new ship,” said Ben Clement, Carnival Cruise Line’s executive vice president of maritime and new builds. The inaugural six-night cruise will spend its first full day at sea before calling at Cozumel from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 17. Carnival Tropicale will visit Isla Tropicale, formerly Mahogany Bay in Roatan, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. the following day, then spend two more days at sea before returning to Galveston on April 21. ## Construction begins in Papenburg Carnival and Meyer Werft held a western-themed steel-cutting event at the German shipyard, where company leaders wore customized cowboy hard hats and the yard served Texas-style barbecue. Carnival Tropicale will carry the Star of Texas on its bow, as Carnival Jubilee does. “Carnival Tropicale is already the fifth Excel-class ship for Carnival Cruise Line,” Meyer Werft GmbH CEO Andre Walter said. He described the vessels as “a successful and highly popular series” produced through the companies’ longstanding partnership. The other Excel-class ships are Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee and the upcoming Carnival Festivale. ## Water park, games and new restaurants Sunsation Point will span multiple decks at the ship’s aft and include Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, a six-slide water park with SunSoaker, the Turning Tides raft slide and Racing Currents. Splash areas will serve younger children, and the water park will remain open later on selected evenings. Other activities will include sports courts and the Treehouse Adventure Trail, which will have netted paths and obstacles. Carnival is redesigning the Fairway 66 Mini Golf course with a Route 66 theme, while The Vault Retrocade will combine contemporary and vintage video games with pinball, air hockey and pool. Renderings of the multi-story Grand Central Atrium depict tropical scenes across integrated display surfaces. The design differs from the other Excel-class ships. The dining lineup will add Uku Lei Lei, serving Hawaiian-inspired food with Asian influences, and Fetaccine, combining Greek and Italian dishes. Emeril’s Coastal Seafood, developed with Carnival Chief Culinary Officer Emeril Lagasse, will feature seafood influenced by coastal regions of the United States. Carnival has so far described the ship’s entertainment only as drawing on the golden era of show business, including dedicated spaces and new experiences. The newbuild will operate four-, five-, six- and eight-day cruises to the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Mexico. The 183,900-gross-ton ship is expected to accommodate roughly 5,200 to 5,300 guests at double occupancy, with maximum capacity of about 6,630. “Carnival Tropicale will bring an exciting new vacation option to Texas when she debuts in 2028,” said Ben Clement, Carnival’s executive vice president of maritime and new builds. Carnival did not disclose starting fares. ## Galveston itineraries span four to eight days The itineraries will visit Carnival’s Paradise Collection destinations, including Celebration Key; RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay; Isla Tropicale; and Puerta Maya. The schedules will also include calls at Progreso and Nassau. The Vault Retrocade will combine older arcade titles with newer games. Three announced dining concepts will cover Hawaiian, Asian, Greek, Italian and seafood menus. Uku Lei Lei will serve Hawaiian-inspired food with Asian influences, while Fetaccine will combine Greek and Italian dishes. Carnival Tropicale is planned for a crew of about 1,735 and will join Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee and Carnival Festivale in the Excel class. Carnival and Meyer Werft held a western-themed construction event at the yard as reservations opened, with company and shipyard representatives wearing cowboy-style hard hats. The companies did not identify a formal construction milestone associated with the gathering. The ship’s entertainment areas will draw on the golden era of show business, although Carnival has not yet named the productions or venues. Het festival is een belangrijk evenement voor de Surinaamse gemeenschap in Nederland, maar trekt een brede doelgroep. Kwaku is niet alleen belangrijk voor de Surinaamse gemeenschap, maar voor heel Nederland. Het is een verbindend festival en die traditie mag niet verloren gaan, vertelt Jrgen. Voor mij voelt Kwaku als een grote renie: een plek waar iedereen elkaar kent en waar de dorpse sfeer van AmsterdamZuidoost ieder jaar weer terugkomt.Kwaku begon in de jaren 70 als voetbaltoernooi en groeide uit tot een groot festival waar cultuur, muziek en eten centraal staan. Er zijn veel foodstands, er is livemuziek en voetbal is nog altijd het sportieve hart van Kwaku, zo schrijft het festival zelf.Vorige maand werd echter bekend dat Kwaku stopt in zijn huidige vorm, onder andere door stijgende kosten en aangescherpte vergunningsvoorwaarden. De organisatie zei in gesprek te zijn met Amsterdam Zuidoost over terugkeer in een afgeslankte vorm.Brede KwakucoalitieDe festivalorganisatoren, kraamhouders, Surinaamse organisaties uit Zuidoost en Raymann slaan nu de handen ineen in wat hij de brede Kwakucoalitie noemt. Hun doel: Kwaku Festival op de lijst van Nederlands immaterieel erfgoed krijgen. Het zou op die lijst in gezelschap zijn van de Nationale Oldtimerdag in Lelystad en het festival Sunsation bij landschapskunstwerk Observatorium. Ook het Rotterdamse zomercarnaval, de Nijmeegse Vierdaagse en Pride Amsterdam zijn Nederlands immaterieel erfgoed. Door Kwaku aan te merken als immaterieel erfgoed, kunnen we de traditie, geschiedenis en het karakter van het festival voor de toekomst waarborgen. Het mag niet verloren gaan, aldus Jrgen.Het traject om van een traditie, feest of ritueel immaterieel erfgoed te maken, kan jaren duren. Ik denk dat Kwaku sowieso terugkomt volgend jaar. De vorm zal misschien veranderen, maar ik verwacht dat het festival dicht bij de oorspronkelijke vorm blijft. Het proces om het een immaterieel erfgoed van te maken kan wel twee jaar duren.
