Cameron’s films shot in Super35 (The Abyss, T2, True Lies, Titanic) were actually reframed for every single shot for 4:3. A custom pan & scan/zoom supervised by JC. He really wanted the 4:3 version to be acceptable.

"The Rock" (1996) is currently on HBO Max (US) in HD, but it's in the 4:3 aspect ratio.
"The Rock" was shot in Super35 which allows filmmakers to frame for widescreen (2.39) and also later reframe shots for more pleasant 4:3 for traditional SD TV's. I don't know why HBO Max has this 4:3 version.

The film was shot on Super35 which was then scanned at 1080p, then edited and finished in that resolution as the basis of film prints for theaters. That same clunky 1080p image has now been blown up to 70mm and it ain’t that pretty. 😬

True, but also, there was a lot of *cheap* color film stock in the '80s that even with loving care still looks a bit thin and pallid. I partially blame the rise of Super35 as a format.

Recently, I tried to watch INDEPENDENCE DAY on Netflix, it was a 16:9 version... not Super35 opened up, actually cropped from the 2.35:1 version.

longer version: rarely does a film's 4:3 Super35 reframed version get an HD transfer and gets distributed onto a streaming service/Blu-ray (I can think of no other film where this has ever happened)

Film will never die. There’s no digital sensor that can match the resolution of even just a four perf 35 let alone getting into Vistavision and 65/70mm. I think they rate super35 at 6k equivalent? And you can’t beat its light response. It’s just gorgeous.
