Orion’s Belt Star
The three bright stars of Orion’s Belt Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka are massive blue supergiants, far larger and hotter than our Sun.

The presence of a binary companion might explain why Betelgeuse seems to dim on six-year timescales (in addition to a 400-day cycle of variability), and could explain why other red supergiants seem to be similarly variable.

The three stars in Orion compared to the Sun:

The stars in Orion's Belt are simply massive. They are all blue supergiants: Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka.

In this NBN episode, I speak with poet Kyle Flemmer about his stellar collection of poetry, Supergiants (@wolsakandwynn.bsky.social , 2025). ✨

We also talk about our earthly (in)significance, bringing science to poetry and more.

In cloned populations, the ciliate protist Euplotes gigatrox can develop into cannibalistic "supergiants" that chase and consume their smaller siblings - demonstrating predatory behaviors more typical of multicellular life! 🧪

Super cool exotic ciliate cell biology 🧪. I would not want to come face-to-face with one of those supergiants! Congrats @blarson.bsky.social and team! Also great thread🧵 -- thanks for sharing!
What could be more exciting than watching Euplotes scurry around under the microscope? How about adding some raptorial predation by supergiant cannibal cells?
